‘If your dreams don’t scare you, they are not big enough.’
How often do you get to experience the true meaning of this saying? My answer is it depends on if you go ahead to settle for a goal that scares you, and work your way to achieve it.
It is not easy
setting a goal that appears to be way above your limit. There is a tendency to
think that when you set a goal that is bigger than yourself, you are simply
dreaming. It takes more than courage to make that dream a reality. We are also
inspired to believe that dreams are valid, and nothing is impossible. In short,
settling for a goal that scares you is allowed. But what does it mean to be
scared? I am presently having a first-hand experience of being scared and must say that it can more daunting than presumed. I choose to hang in there all the same.
My experience settling for a scary goal has been a cocktail of sleepless nights, anxiety, constant thinking and rethinking, strategizing and re-strategizing, brain fatigue resulting from a deep thought process. Other far daunting experiences may follow sooner or later – you must be prepared for the worst of it (because we cannot fully predict what the future looks like). However, one of the things I draw a source of relief from is the realization that I am not alone, nor the first to walk down a scary goal’s road.
Guess what? There are people with scarier goals. Not sure whether they also had/have numerous several sleepless nights, among other experiences as well. Would be good to ask around and find out.
When you develop the stamina to face goals that scare you and go ahead to achieve them, you not only feel accomplished; you also develop a thick skin to handle the anxiety and scares that come with them. You look at a bigger picture of the positive possibilities and soldier on. It will not be a walk in the park, you may want to give up and switch to goals that are within reach (less stressful). However, empires were not built by aiming for the stress-free dreams. It took strong-willed men and women with scary goals to make them happen.
In this new
year, I challenge us to go for goals that scares us. Go for something bigger, that
you never thought doable, but which you can achieve by looking beyond your
environment and resources. Stretch and maximise the resources you have - however few or
many. You must be ready to let go of your comfort, survive tougher times, wade through unknown waters, or
work twice as hard (or more). If you are fortunate to have luck on your side,
the better but do not count on it. Be ready for extreme setbacks.
I also believe that beyond faith in yourself, faith in God is paramount. He comes through in moments we least expect – but only when we believe.
